Chapter Fourteen

As soon as Cleo and I got home, I let Bella out, then contacted the rest of my friends to let them know we’d found Cameron dead.

Both Sam and Alice were immediately concerned that Cleo and I had taken too great a risk. In retrospect, it was clear that our plan had not been a good one, and I gladly agreed when Alice asked me to promise not to interview suspects in deserted locations.

Then I arranged to meet everyone—except Zeke, who, of course, had to be at school on a Thursday—at the Dogwood Café for lunch the next day to discuss the investigation. I hated to leave Zeke out, but with all festival tents required to be set up by four tomorrow afternoon and the gates opening to the public at nine Friday morning, we needed to act quickly.

I drove to work on Thursday to allow me to run home quickly to check on Bella. The whole way in, I thought about Cameron. I hadn’t known him, but his death would make a big hole in the lives of his family and friends. Across town, I knew people were shocked and grieving, trying to wrap their brains around the loss. And somewhere, the killer probably sat smugly, believing he or she would never be caught.

For the morning, I had to focus on the museum’s preparations for the festival, but at lunch, my friends and I would do our best to figure out who that culprit was.

Imani and I spent the morning loading her minivan with items for the museum’s display at the festival. Finally, a few minutes before noon, we slid the last box into place. I wiped my brow, and Imani fanned her face with one hand. If you were simply standing around, the weather was perfect. If you were working, it was hot. Luckily, it was supposed to cool down a bit before tomorrow.

I zipped over to Elm Street, let Bella out for a moment, then returned my car to the museum and walked to the café.

The outdoor seating area was more crowded than normal, but Alice was already there, sitting at our favorite table. Sam arrived shortly after me, and Cleo rushed up a minute later. We settled in, were served our drinks, and quickly placed our lunch orders. Sam opened the umbrella over our table, providing welcome shade.

The delight I normally felt in eating with my friends at the restaurant I thought of as “our place” was missing. Instead, my shoulders were tense, and I kept finding myself digging my nails into my palms.

Across the table from me, Cleo looked just as ill at ease. As soon as the server left our table, Cleo leaned in. “Bryce has been arrested for Cameron’s murder. I don’t even know if he’ll be let out on bail.”

The rest of us sat silent. I was reluctant to tell Cleo, but personally, I felt relieved that Bryce was in custody. If the police thought he’d committed not just one, but two murders, I didn’t want him out on the streets.
